Key points
| When a distance is unknown, writing the single equation of the axis it lies on is enough.
| In a question where the directions themselves turn, apply the same turn to the asked direction.
| Net turn equals the number of right turns minus the number of left turns.
| The net turn technique serves direction only and not distance.
| The back door of a north facing house opens to the south.
| If B is north east of A then A is south west of B.
| The morning shadow falls west and the evening shadow falls east.
| If one option is the sum of all the steps it is almost always a trap.
| Checking a campus plan and a measurement sheet is the same skill.

Problems with an unknown distance
| In hard questions the distance of one step is not given but is itself asked, and the final position is stated instead.
| Such a question has to be solved not by a figure but by two equations, one for the east west axis and one for the north south axis.
| Only the equation of the axis on which the unknown distance lies is needed and the other need not be written at all.
| Example: a person walks X metres west from home, turns left and walks twenty three, turns left and walks thirty six, turns left and walks twenty three and turns left and walks eighteen metres to reach home.
| On the east west axis the west X and the west eighteen are on one side and the east thirty six is on the other.
| Since the person returned home the two sides must be equal, so X plus eighteen equals thirty six and X equals eighteen.
Rotation of the whole plane
| In some questions it is asked what the south west becomes if the north becomes the east.
| Here the person does not turn but the whole wheel of directions turns, and going from north to east needs a turn of ninety degrees clockwise.
| Applying the same ninety degrees to the asked direction gives the answer, so the south west becomes the north west.
| A question where the person turns and a question where the directions themselves turn are different; in the first the directions are fixed and in the second the directions change.
The net turn technique
| Following many turns one by one wastes time, and subtracting the number of left turns from the number of right turns gives the net turn.
| For example with four right turns and three left turns the net is one right turn, that is ninety degrees clockwise.
| But this technique works only for finding the final direction, and if a distance is asked every step must still be counted.
| In a question that asks only the final direction the distances need not even be read, and this saves twenty seconds a question.
The back door and the front door
| The front door of a north facing house opens to the north, so its back door opens to the south.
| A person who comes out of the back door and walks is walking to the south and not to the north.
| If this one sentence is read wrongly the answer of the whole question goes to the opposite direction, and that opposite answer is exactly what is kept among the options as a trap.
The same skill in administration
| Reading a campus plan, deciding where a building stands, checking a description of land boundaries and tallying a measurement sheet of a contractor all use this same skill.
| Assembling a boundary in the mind from a description of so many metres north and so many metres east is the daily work of an officer who checks a measurement sheet.
Six traps in hard questions
| The back door trap, which makes the very first direction be taken in reverse.
| The order of direction trap, since the direction of B from A and of A from B are opposite.
| The distance travelled trap, where one option is the sum of all the steps.
| The last turn trap, where the direction has changed after the last turn even though no distance follows it.
| The shadow timing trap, since the morning shadow and the evening shadow fall in opposite directions.
| The face to face trap, since the left and right of people standing face to face are reversed.
| If these six traps are checked beforehand the risk of negative marking nearly disappears.
