The General Method
| Note first how many people there are and what the shape is.
| Write down which way everyone is facing.
| Start from a fixed clue such as an end or the middle position.
| Use the uncertain clues last.
| Answer only after every clue has been used.
The Facing Rule
| If everyone faces north then their left is your right and their right is your left.
| If everyone faces south then their left and right match yours.
Single Row Arrangement
| People in one row all face the same way, usually north or south.
| If the question does not state the facing direction, the usual convention is to assume north.
Double Row Arrangement
| The two rows sit facing each other.
| Usually one row faces north and the other south.
| The people opposite each other occupy the same position number.
| Left and right run in opposite directions in the two rows.
Position Terms
| ಪದ | Term | ಅರ್ಥ | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ತಕ್ಷಣದ ಎಡ ಅಥವಾ ಬಲ | Immediate left or right | ನಿಖರವಾಗಿ ಪಕ್ಕದ ಸ್ಥಾನ | Exactly the adjacent seat |
| ಎಡ ಅಥವಾ ಬಲ | Left or right | ಆ ಕಡೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿಯಾದರೂ | Anywhere on that side |
| ನಡುವೆ | Between | ಎರಡು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಆದರೆ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲೇ ಇರಬೇಕೆಂದಿಲ್ಲ | In between two people but not necessarily adjacent |
| ನಿಖರವಾಗಿ ನಡುವೆ | Exactly between | ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲೇ | Adjacent on both sides |
| ತುದಿ | End | ಸಾಲಿನ ಮೊದಲ ಅಥವಾ ಕೊನೆಯ ಸ್ಥಾನ | The first or last seat of the row |
Formula
Total number of people = position from the left plus position from the right minus one
| Without subtracting one, that person is counted twice.
Example
17. | If a person is seventh from the left and eleventh from the right then the total is 7 plus 11 minus 1, that is 17.
Exam tip
| One arrangement carries four or five questions, so a correct diagram earns all of them.
| A wrong diagram loses all of them, so invest the time at the start.
