Key points
- Eight parts of speech; Context determines the part of speech; Function over form; Suffix identification.
Introduction to Parts of Speech
In the English language, words are categorized into eight fundamental classes based on their syntactic function and semantic role within a sentence. Mastering these eight parts of speech is essential for grammatical accuracy in competitive examinations like KPSC (KAS, FDA, SDA, Group C) and Karnataka Teacher Recruitment exams (GPSTR, HSTR, K-TET).
| Part of Speech | Primary Function | Example Words |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | Names a person, place, thing, or concept | Bengaluru, teacher, honesty, iron |
| Pronoun | Replaces a noun to avoid redundancy | he, she, it, they, someone, which |
| Verb | Denotes an action, state, or occurrence | write, become, exist, investigate |
| Adjective | Qualifies or modifies a noun/pronoun | diligent, five, sincere, enormous |
| Adverb | Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb | rapidly, very, seldom, everywhere |
| Preposition | Shows relationship of place, time, or direction | in, at, upon, between, through |
| Conjunction | Connects words, phrases, or clauses | and, but, because, although, yet |
| Interjection | Expresses sudden emotions or exclamations | Alas!, Hurrah!, Oh!, Bravo! |
Key Rule
A single word can function as multiple parts of speech depending strictly upon its structural context in the sentence. Never classify a word in isolation without examining its syntactic role.
Example
Fast as an Adjective: He is a fast bowler.
Fast as an Adverb: He ran fast to catch the train.
Fast as a Noun: She observed a day-long fast.
Fast as a Verb: Many devotees fast on Mondays.
Exam Tip / Common Error
Words ending in -ly are not always adverbs. Words like friendly, lonely, lovely, brotherly are adjectives. Test the modified word: if it modifies a noun, it is an adjective.
