Consonant Classification and Syllable Structure
For competitive exams like Karnataka GPSTR, HSTR, and K-TET Paper-II, questions focus extensively on the place and manner of articulation, minimal pairs, and syllable division.
1. Classification of 24 Consonants by Manner of Articulation
| Manner | Count | Phonetic Symbols | Acoustic Nature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plosives (Stops) | 6 | /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/ | Complete closure followed by explosive release of air |
| Fricatives | 9 | /f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /h/ | Friction caused by air passing through a narrow passage |
| Affricates | 2 | /tʃ/ (church), /dʒ/ (judge) | Complete closure followed by slow, friction-laden release |
| Nasals | 3 | /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ (sing) | Airflow diverted entirely through the nasal cavity |
| Lateral | 1 | /l/ (light) | Air flows along the sides of the tongue |
| Approximants (Frictionless / Semi-vowels) | 3 | /r/, /w/, /j/ (yes) | Articulators approach each other without causing audible friction |
Key Rule
A Syllable is a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants. The vowel sound forms the essential nucleus of the syllable. The number of syllables in a word equals the number of distinct vowel sounds heard, not the number of written vowel letters.
Example
Monosyllabic (1 syllable): cat, through, scream
Disyllabic (2 syllables): doc-tor, pa-per, con-duct
Trisyllabic (3 syllables): beau-ti-ful, to-mor-row
Polysyllabic (4+ syllables): pho-to-gra-phic, ex-a-mi-na-tion
Exam Tip / Common Error
Minimal Pairs: Two words that differ in meaning based on only one single phoneme in the exact same position (e.g., pin /pɪn/ and bin /bɪn/, or ship /ʃɪp/ and sheep /ʃiːp/).
