Data Sufficiency
| Here a question is given along with two statements.
| You must decide which statements are enough to answer, and the answer itself need not be calculated.
The Most Important Rule
| Do not go on to calculate the actual answer.
| Deciding only whether an answer can be reached is enough and saves a great deal of time.
The Method
| Look at the first statement alone and decide whether it is enough.
| Then forget the first and look at the second alone.
| Only if neither is enough on its own should you consider them together.
The Trap
| Carrying over information from the first statement while testing the second is the biggest error.
| Each must be tested entirely on its own.
Example
| The question is what the area of a rectangle is.
| If the first says the length is 10 metres and the second says the breadth is 6 metres, neither is enough alone.
| Together they are enough, and there is no need to calculate the answer of 60 at all.
Data Interpretation
| A table or a chart is given and several questions are asked from it.
| Read the heading and the units first, since the figures may be in thousands.
| Identify what each row and each column represents.
| Check which year or which department the question concerns.
| Do not mistake the total row for a department row.
The Usual Calculations
| A percentage contribution is the part divided by the total and multiplied by a hundred.
| The denominator of a percentage change is always the older value.
| If the ratio of two departments is asked, cancel it down to its simplest form.
| If an average is asked, count how many rows must be included.
Exam tip
| One table carries four or five questions, so the time spent reading it is not wasted.
| But use only the figures each question actually needs.
Practice questions
Answer all, then check. Explanations appear after checking.
