Values Worth Memorising
| The squares from 1 to 30.
| The cubes from 1 to 15.
| The multiplication tables up to 20.
| The percentage values of the common fractions.
Key point
| Memorising these four lists speeds up the whole quantitative section.
| This is not limited to this chapter alone.
Finding a Square Root
| The square root of a perfect square can be guessed from its last digit.
| ವರ್ಗದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಅಂಕಿ | Last digit of the square | ಮೂಲದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಅಂಕಿ | Last digit of the root |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 ಅಥವಾ 9 | 1 or 9 |
| 4 | 2 ಅಥವಾ 8 | 2 or 8 |
| 5 | 5 |
| 6 | 4 ಅಥವಾ 6 | 4 or 6 |
| 9 | 3 ಅಥವಾ 7 | 3 or 7 |
| 0 | 0 |
| No number ending in 2, 3, 7 or 8 can be a perfect square.
Example
6. | To find the square root of 1296, the last digit 6 means the root ends in 4 or 6.
36. | Since 1296 lies between 1225 and 1600 the root lies between 35 and 40, so the answer is 36.
Multiplication Shortcuts
| When multiplying numbers near a power of ten, write them as a sum or difference.
| For example writing 98 as a hundred minus two makes the multiplication easy.
| To multiply by five, multiply by ten and halve.
| To multiply by eleven, multiply by ten and add the original number.
Using Percentage Fractions
| Using a percentage as a fraction turns a multiplication into a division.
Example
| 37.5 per cent of 1440 is three eighths of it.
540. | Dividing 1440 by eight gives 180 and multiplying by three gives 540.
Approximation Questions
| An approximation question does not need an exact answer and marking the nearest option is enough.
| Round each number to the nearest convenient value.
| If the options are very close together, round less aggressively.
| Rounding everything in the same direction makes the errors accumulate.
Exam tip
| Read first whether the question asks for the exact value or an approximation.
| Solving an approximation question exactly wastes time.
