Key points
In opposite directions the relative speed is the sum
In the same direction the relative speed is the difference
To cross a pole only the length of the train matters
To cross a platform the two lengths are added
For two trains use the sum of lengths and the relative speed
In journey problems the distance stays the same

Relative Speed
Formula
Moving in opposite directions, the relative speed is the sum of the two speeds
Moving in the same direction, the relative speed is the difference of the two speeds
Key point
| In opposite directions they approach faster, hence the sum.
| In the same direction they close slowly, hence the difference.
What the Train Crosses
| ಏನನ್ನು ದಾಟುತ್ತದೆ | What is crossed | ಕ್ರಮಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ದೂರ | Distance to be covered |
|---|---|
| ಕಂಬ ಅಥವಾ ನಿಂತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ | A pole or a standing person | ರೈಲಿನ ಉದ್ದ ಮಾತ್ರ | The length of the train only |
| ವೇದಿಕೆ ಅಥವಾ ಸೇತುವೆ | A platform or a bridge | ರೈಲಿನ ಉದ್ದ ಜೊತೆ ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಉದ್ದ | The length of the train plus the length of the platform |
| ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ರೈಲು | Another train | ಎರಡೂ ರೈಲುಗಳ ಉದ್ದಗಳ ಮೊತ್ತ | The sum of the lengths of both trains |
The Trap
| A pole has no length, so the length of the train alone is enough.
| A platform has length, and forgetting to add it is the common error.
Example
| A train 200 metres long at 20 metres per second crosses a pole in 200 divided by 20, that is 10 seconds.
| The same train crosses a 300 metre platform in 500 divided by 20, that is 25 seconds.
The Two-train Case
| When two trains cross each other the distance to be covered is the sum of their lengths.
| The speed to be used is the relative speed and not the speed of either train alone.
Journey Problems
| The pattern where a person is late at one speed and early at another appears repeatedly.
| Since the distance is the same, the difference between the two times can be used to form an equation.
Example
| Walking at 5 kilometres per hour a person is 10 minutes late and at 6 kilometres per hour arrives 10 minutes early.
| The total difference in time is 20 minutes, that is one third of an hour, and this is the basis of the equation.
Exam tip
| In a train question write down first what the distance actually is.
| The decision whether to add a length is what decides the answer.
