Structure of an Argument
(Assumption). | An argument has premises and a conclusion drawn from them, and the unstated link that joins them is the assumption.
| ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಬಗೆ | Question type | ಸರಿಯಾದ ಉತ್ತರ ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ | What the right answer does |
|---|---|
| ಊಹೆ | Assumption | ವಾದ ನಿಲ್ಲಲು ಸತ್ಯವಾಗಿರಲೇಬೇಕಾದ ಹೇಳದ ಅಂಶ | An unstated point that must be true for the argument to hold |
| ಬಲಪಡಿಸು | Strengthen | ತೀರ್ಮಾನವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ನಂಬಲರ್ಹವಾಗಿಸುವ ಹೊಸ ಮಾಹಿತಿ | New information that makes the conclusion more believable |
| ದುರ್ಬಲಗೊಳಿಸು | Weaken | ತೀರ್ಮಾನದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಂಶಯ ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಹೊಸ ಮಾಹಿತಿ | New information that casts doubt on the conclusion |
| ಲೇಖಕನ ಉದ್ದೇಶ | Purpose of the author | ವಿವರಿಸುವುದು, ವಾದಿಸುವುದು, ಟೀಕಿಸುವುದು ಅಥವಾ ಹೋಲಿಸುವುದು | To explain, argue, criticise or compare |
| Negation test: if the argument collapses when an option is negated, that option is an assumption.
Number-Based Passages
| A percentage point is the direct difference between two percentages, and relative change is that difference divided by the starting value.
| Example: a rise from fifty to sixty-five is fifteen percentage points, but a thirty percent rise in relative terms, because fifteen divided by fifty is zero point three.
Traps in Critical Reading
| Taking correlation as cause.
| Choosing an option that only repeats the conclusion as the assumption.
| An option on the same topic but irrelevant to the argument.
| Confusing absolute and relative change.
Key point
| The science passage matches the falsifiability idea of Karl Popper, and it connects with the research concepts of Unit II.
Exam tip
| In a strengthen or weaken question accept the new information as true and ask only what it does to the conclusion.
