Proportion
| When two ratios are equal the four quantities are said to be in proportion.
The Rule
| In a proportion the product of the two outer terms equals the product of the two inner terms.
| This is what is called cross multiplication.
Example
| The ratios two to three and eight to twelve are equal.
| This is because 2 multiplied by 12 and 3 multiplied by 8 both give 24.
Direct Variation
| When one quantity rises and the other rises in the same proportion, that is direct variation.
| For example more articles cost more money and a longer distance needs more fuel.
Inverse Variation
| When one quantity rises and the other falls, that is inverse variation.
| For example more staff means fewer days to finish the work.
Key point
| In inverse variation the product of the two quantities stays constant.
| In direct variation their quotient stays constant.
Example
| If 6 clerks finish a task in 12 days, the total work is 72 clerk days.
| With 8 clerks, 72 divided by 8 gives 9 days.
The Unitary Method
| The unitary method is to find the value of one unit first and then multiply by the number needed.
| This method works for both direct and inverse questions.
The Trap
| Solving an inverse question as though it were direct is the commonest error in this chapter.
| To check, see whether the answer moves the right way, since more staff must give fewer days.
The Administrative Context
| Staff and days questions are inverse variation.
| Number of units and cost questions are direct variation.
| Questions on distributing a grant among departments are amount division.
Exam tip
| As soon as you read the question, write down in one word whether it is direct or inverse.
| This single step prevents most of the errors in this chapter.
