Marked Price and Discount
| Discount is always calculated on the marked price and never on the cost price.
Formula
Selling price = marked price minus discount
Discount per cent = discount divided by marked price multiplied by a hundred
Key point
| There are two different bases in this chapter.
| Profit and loss are on the cost price while discount is on the marked price.
Successive Discounts
| Two discounts cannot simply be added because the second applies to a reduced amount.
Formula
Total discount = first rate plus second rate minus the product of the two rates divided by a hundred
Example
| Successive discounts of 20 per cent and 10 per cent give 20 plus 10 minus 2, that is 28 per cent.
| So it is less than a single discount of 30 per cent, and 30 is the trap.
Two Articles Sold at the Same Price
| When two articles are sold at the same price with an equal percentage of profit on one and loss on the other, the overall result is always a loss.
Formula
Loss per cent = the square of that common rate divided by a hundred
Example
| If the common rate is 10 per cent then the loss is 100 divided by a hundred, that is 1 per cent.
| The belief that the profit and loss cancel is the trap here.
Aggregate Problems
| When the overall profit on several articles is asked, the percentages of the individual articles must not be averaged.
| Find the total cost price and the total selling price and then calculate the percentage.
The Government Procurement Context
| In office procurement the discount offered by a vendor is calculated on the marked price.
| So when comparing two vendor offers, compare the final amount payable rather than the discount rates.
Exam tip
| Identify first which price the percentage is asked on.
| Cost price, marked price and selling price are three different bases.
